Why did you make You Make The Website?

Working so long in digital for big business, I saw how much money could be made online. Through my education and passion for more knowledge about digital, I was keen to get out of the 9-5 roles, and empower others to make their own success online.

Who are you?

I am Dean Wormald. I grew up on the North Coast of NSW and enjoy photography, travelling, the beach, digital design and making websites and blogs.

I am not a business. In 1998 I started making websites. I studied IT and design throughout high school. I was given a scholarship to study website production at TAFE. I completed a Bachelor of Multimedia and marketing in 2005. From 1998 to 2005 I was creating websites and digital designs on a freelance basis.

I then started working professionally when I moved to Sydney, my first job was with the AdNews Interactive Agency of the Year (3 years running), Amnesia Razorfish, working predominantly for Xbox 360, Microsoft, Land Rover and IKEA.

After that I was headhunted to work for Microsoft in Sydney, managing a key website and spending lots of time on SEO there.

Some travel followed, which resulted in my japantravelmate.com website.

A year in Melbourne was to follow, where I worked for Clemenger BBDO and Clemenger Proximity, where both myself and the company won so many awards, there’s just too many to list here. Around this time I started my personal blog, deanwormald.com, I’ve kept track of some of the awards there.

Now, I’m working on You Make The Website.

What do you do?

Finally I’ve gotten out of big business, and am looking to make an independent income through online activities.

When did you start doing what you’re doing?

The digital and website making thing started as a passion in 1998 (HTML and CSS are my second language). It started professionally in 2005 when I began doing freelance jobs for businesses, before starting work in Sydney.

In 2010, work began on creating You Make The Website. The first edition of the guide was finished in early 2011, after that a few months were spent testing, refining and then launching the website you’re on right now.
